Make a Mosquito Head Net

This article will go over how to make a mosquito head net. The design of this head net is a little different than some others out there. It doesn’t have a top sewn into it, and instead uses an elastic at the top to hold the net around your head. It is meant to be used in conjunction with a hat. The brim of the hat holds the netting off your face, and the hat protects the top of the head from mosquitoes.

The head net also includes a handy carrying pouch that is sewn into the head net so that it’s always at the ready and never gets lost.

Materials Needed:

1 - Piece of mosquito netting 38” x 18”.

1 - Piece of lightweight ripstop fabric 9-1/2” x 4-1/4”.

1 - 40” long piece of 1/16” shock cord.

1 - 30” long piece of 1/16” shock cord.

1 - micro cord lock.

1 - 3-1/2” long piece of 3/4” grosgrain.

1 - 2” long piece of 3/4” grosgrain.

1 - 1/4” grommet.

Instructions:

Prepare the carrying pouch by cutting a piece of lightweight fabric to 9-1/2” x 4-1/4”. Sew a 3/8” double fold hem on the short ends of the piece, as shown below.

Fold the ends of the fabric wrong sides together where shown below. When properly folded, the ends of the fabric should overlap in the center of the piece by about 1/2”.

Take a 3-1/2” piece of 3/4” grosgrain and fold it in half forming a loop. Pin the loop to the top corner of the pouch, as shown below. Stitch the top edge of the pouch with a 3/8” seam allowance, stitching the grosgrain loop in place.

Trim the seam allowance down to half its width, trimming the grosgrain as well, as shown below.

Turn the pouch wrong side out. Stitch along the sewn edge, stitching just to the inside of the previous seam allowance. This will enclose the previously sewn seam allowance within the new seam, as shown below.

Double stitch the area where the grosgrain attaches, as shown below.

Cut a piece of mosquito netting to 18” x 38”. Fold the netting in half, as shown below.

Take the carrying pouch and pin it between the two layers of mosquito netting. The unsewn end of the pouch should be aligned with the edge of the mosquito netting. The pouch should be wrong side out, and should be positioned 3” up from the bottom edge, as shown below.

Stitch the edge of the mosquito netting with a 3/8” seam allowance, stitching the carry pouch in place. Double stitch the area where the pouch attaches, as shown below.

Trim the seam allowance to half its width, trimming the carry pouch as well.

Turn the netting wrong side out. Stitch along the sewn edge, stitching just to the inside of the previous seam allowance. This will enclose the previously sewn seam allowance within the new seam, as shown below.

Sew a 1/2” double fold hem along the bottom edge of the head net (the side closest to the carrying pouch) as shown below.

Find the center front of the head net. The seam in the head net is the center back. Cut a small hole through the top layer of netting at the front center of the hem as shown below. This hole is for the drawcord and will be reinforced with a grommet in the subsequent steps.

Install a grommet in a 2” piece of 3/4” grosgrain. The grommet should be installed 9/16” from the edge of the grosgrain to the center of the grommet as shown below.

Fold the grosgrain in half around the hem of the head net. The grommet should be placed so that it is directly over the hole that was previously cut. Stitch the grosgrain in place, as shown below.

Take the 40” long elastic cord and thread it through the grommet and hole in hem, around the perimeter of the head net (inside the hem) and back out through the grommet.

Install a micro cord lock on the elastic cord and tie the ends so the cord lock can’t slide off, as shown below.

Sew a 1/2” double fold hem around the top edge of the head net. Start stitching near the back center of the net and leave a 3/8” gap where the stitching begins and ends, as shown below. This opening is for installing the upper elastic cord.

Take the 30” long elastic cord and thread it through the opening in the hem, around the perimeter of the head net (inside the hem) and back out through the opening.

Thread elastic cord through upper hem.

Tie the ends of the elastic cord together, as shown below. The knot should be tied so that the elastic fits nicely around your head. It is a good idea to wear the hat you plan to use with the net while adjusting this knot. Once the knot has been adjusted and the head net fits the way you like, the ends of the elastic cord can be trimmed and the knot can be pushed up into the hem. You can sew the opening closed if you wish, but I like to leave it open, so that the knot can be adjusted in the future if needed.

That’s it! You now have a completed head net. To use the carrying pouch, simply turn the pouch right side out while at the same time stuffing the net into the pouch.
